Car Fire Funny Car Fire Headlines

Release from IHRA:

"The 'Chicago Fire' Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car has been a work in progress this season" says Mike Faser, owner of the potent fueler based out of Plainfield, Illinois.  In recent years the team has campaigned the car as an AA/Fuel Altered, running the car well into the 5-second zone at nearly 250 mph. That all changed for this season.

"What's going on for us now is very different for us", Faser said. "We're catching up to a different engine combination based on the new guidelines."

In previous years, Faser's car has been one the most formidable AA/Fuel Altered's in the country, but the recent change to the IHRA Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car class has made for an interesting start to the 2010 season.

"When we got the invite from John (Dunn) and IHRA to run in the Nitro Jam, we naturally had to consider what the new body and engine/clutch guidelines would do to our set-up. Let's just say it's added an entirely new element to how we run the car," Faser said. "The full size body changed the way the car launches, how it uses the clutch, burns fuel, engine timing, and everything else in-between. However we do believe we're approaching our safe zone again.

"We were happy to at least see six flat on the boards in Baton Rouge and at first glance not hurting anything, that was until after the traps when the crazy thing kicked a rod out. However as any seasoned racer will tell you – that's just racing."

Between rounds the "Chicago Fire" car went through a semi-typical look-over with Dan Minick diving for the oil pan for a routine swap out of rod bearings, then clutch servicing and mixing fuel. Andy Kacena worked over the top side of the engine including cylinder head servicing and superchargers. Faser worked with Minick on the bottom end as well as all aspects of the car while prepping the tune-up for the next run. Rick Krafft is the team's driver and over-seer, while providing feedback to improve the car's next run and Brett Walker keep's the flow of things going between rounds as well as transportation.

"We are very excited about going to Rockingham. We are headed there to not only race, but to redeem ourselves," Faser said. "We have a great car and crew and feel our competitive edge is just around the corner. Hopefully 'The Rock' will be the place that happens. Our goal is to just get from point A to point B in solid form like we used to. Once we do that – look out. With all our guys on top of the tune-up and with Ricky driving we hope to have a real hot rod again."

And to accomplish that goal the "Chicago Fire" crew is going to need a true team effort.

"Funny Car racing is a team effort at any level, especially when there is money and a points chase involved. Our guys have been working together for years now where simple gestures often tell the other crew person what to do. You need that when time is of the essence, and spectators are there to see a good show," Faser said. "In that regard,  we can't say enough about IHRA's vision and forward thinking about what fans want to see, and then putting the entire Nitro Jam together. It was an incredible effort. We also would like to thank John and Melissa Dunn for their coordinating with IHRA, and then especially the great family of funny car teams for their efforts thus far. We are elated to be part of the greatest drag racing show on earth."
